What are Architectural Details?

Architectural details are the pocket-sized (often overlooked) permanent finishes of a infinite that have the ability to characterize and define the entire room. Sometimes they are used to hide ugly imperfections. Other times, cheap architectural features practice nothing more than breathe dimension and charm into an otherwise irksome space.

While such details may not necesarily add monetary value to a home, they make a lasting and persuasive impression. Ironically, the persuasive osculation of a lilliputian wall moulding could inadvertently add upwardly to college dollars at resale. See what I did there? If calculation more character and amuse to your home is something you've been considering, read on.

three Piece of cake Ways to Add Character to Your Domicile Through Compages

The 3 principal means to add architectural involvement to your dwelling are:

Old Walls Need Love Too

Don't let the photos fool you. The ii walls featured higher up are in actually bad condition. Hiring a professional that specializes in plaster walls is not in the upkeep. And then I'll be using a mixture of crown and wall moulding to add together small only impactful interest to my role/guest room. Additionally, applying Sherwin Williams' Tricorn black in a matte finish will hide some of the wall's imperfections.

Installing crown moulding is a rather intense process that deserves its own space. So I'll accost that another time. In this post, I will just accost how to install wall moulding. Beneath is the procedure I've used.

Needed Items

  • Leveler

  • Caulk

  • Sparse wood, MDF, or foam strips for wall panels

  • Wood glue

  • Miter saw (here's the ane I utilize) or a miter box with handheld saw (which I as well utilize)

  • Nail gun (if installing manually, use finishing nails and a nail set up to countersink them into the trim)

  • A piddling fleck of math

How to Install Wall Moulding (Wall Panels)

one. Measure the length and width of your infinite and make up one's mind how large you want your wall panels. Here's how:

  • Later on measuring the bridge of each wall, I decided I wanted the boxes to set 8 inches from the ceiling, and 10 inches from the flooring. This is the perimeter, the area around the panels.

  • Next, I adamant how far I wanted the wall panels to set from one another. For me that was 4".

  • I wanted adequately big boxes with a simple, mod artful. Thirty-5 and a half inches wide for each box was the sweetness spot. Once I subtracted eight" from the top, and ten" from the bottom, that left me a box height of 75" +/-. Perfect for my 8 foot ceilings.

  • Five rectangle boxes measuring 35½" x 75" with no chair rail in the middle is what I needed.

  • Using a pencil, I marked the verbal placement of boxes directly onto the walls.

iv. Using a miter box, I cut a 45 caste angle at the end if each moulding strip to create a tight joint.

5. Either method of assembling the panel boxes before adhering them to the wall, or piece by piece during installation will work. I tried it both ways.

half-dozen. When applying the moulding strips, be sure to apply a bead of forest mucilage or another adhesive along the backside before nailing. NOTE: The mucilage and nails work together to continue the moulding in place.

seven. Caulk & paint

Et Voila, you are done!

"Work-in-progress" photos are rarely cool looking. But I did my all-time to stage these in a way that was nearly highly-seasoned. I encourage you lot to whorl upward and down to view the earlier and afters of this corner. The difference is shocking to me to say the least.

I was both surprised and relieved by how piece of cake it was to add this feature to my space. Even The Married man gave me his signature, nasal olfactory organ "whaaaow" (a sign of daze and blessing). Installing the crown molding will be a slight footstep up, but I'm ready for the challenge.

If you're wondering how I'm doing on my upkeep, hither's where I stand up:

-Furnishings $200
-Building Mat'ls $125 (currently $65)
-Accessories $ 130
-Lighting $45 (currently $40)

Total: $500 (+20% contingency) // Current Standing: $435 ($65 nether budget) Woo hoo!
